My boyfriend and I went there a few Fridays ago, and we really enjoyed both the food and the ambiance. One star knocked off due to high prices for what you get, but the food was overall great (we recommend the miso glazed salmon, the crunch roll, and the mochi dessert) and we really liked our cocktails too. Another note is that they have a great happy hour, with $5 sake (and reduced priced beers and wine)! Would definitely recommend a visit!

I wanted to like Izakaya Sushi Ran, because I rather liked Nomica, the previous restaurant in this space, with the same owners; the potential is there for this to be a worthy replacement, but at the moment it misses the mark.

Certain things about the food are just, well, off. The yellowtail is cut far too thick, but the portion is very generous for $18. Meanwhile, the execution of the spinach salad is completely on point, except it feels tiny for $8. The Tori (chicken) tempura is a bit small for $12 and yet the plate is absolutely drowning in the tartar sauce it is served with.

The service is also just not there yet. The pacing of the meal was really off, with dishes arriving sometimes too quickly and sometimes with excessive delay. Meanwhile, the staff only check on you right after you get a dish, so it's difficult to get more food or drinks ordered, or to get your check.

These are all the sort of new restaurant problems that can be worked out, and hopefully in a few months, Izakaya Sushi Ran will have ironed out the kinks.

The restaurant is cute and not too loud. Service was also pretty good and attentive. The waitress had good recommendations on the menu and we ate pretty quickly.

The king salmon is very good. Great quality and fresh. The pork belly was well cooked and had a nice sauce to go with it but I would have liked some crispiness on the top as the texture was a bit boring and, considering the amount of fat in it, it could have been better. Their tofu is really good. Very interesting combination of flavors.

The purple yam desert needed more ice cream... the yam alone is too dry. The ice cream and the kinako on top were very good.

Super great food. The salmon plate was amazing, as well as the waygu beef rolls. Bar had great crafted cocktails & delicious wines. Make sure you enjoy their happy hour as well!

I hear this exceptional place is about to close. the owner has another restaurant, in Oakland, perhaps? The loss of great food, beautifully prepared, at a price we can afford, is too much to assess. When I think of eating out, this is the place I go. Do not know what i will do now.
