Towada Sushi

This restaurant is in the heart of downtown San Mateo. I passed by it and noticed the deals they had in their front window. My friend and I decided we would make the effort to try it. They have a happy hour every day from 1 - 3 pm with deals, as well as just everyday cheap pricing. We didn't have super high hopes, as the food was super cheap. We ordered three rolls: California, rainbow, and dragon, and a chicken teriyaki and tempura combo dinner. It came with lettuce and miso soup.

The sushi was actually really fresh! We were thoroughly impressed by the amount of food they provided with the rolls and chicken. Though the teriyaki chicken was a bit dry, there was lots of sauce on the bottom of the plate. I was surprised by the lettuce wraps since I thought it would've been more of a spring mix for the salad.

There was also a bit of disorganization in picking up the food. I waited a pretty long time for a pretty simple order and people were just crowding around the front. They didn't call out my order when it was finished; I had to check again and then it was finished. I plan to go again, but will give ample time before going to pick it up. I would also just stick to their sushi than dinner plates.

Good quality sushi! Would bring friends here again - and order for takeout. Friendly staff.

AWESOME SERVICE & EXTRA PORTIONS!

Tried this place out as a regular of OTS, just a few doors down. Some of the rolls were cheaper va OTS. The lady taking orders was so sweet and could not be any nicer. She was patient, explained rolls to me, and offered anything she could to make this all easier for a first timer. I only ordered 4 rolls and I ended up with 11 items!!! She mentioned a free salad on the phone but she included edamame, shrimp chips (super yummy), a gray soda, and not one but TWO Miso soups. I will definitely return to Towada!

Lots of fish in the rainbow roll, lion king rolls were perfectly cooked, and California rolls were enormous! Good flavor, including the pasta salad and shrimp chips. The service took this to a whole new level. I’d recommend trying this place out if you want to have a sushi FEAST!

two days ago was the first time we visited this place. But It is no doubt not the last. We had a good time with the courteous service, with the finest meal and wine and with the decent price. We will definitely go back there in a short time.

Honestly, we have no idea how this restaurant stays in business! The portions are HUGE for the price and quality is pretty good too. It’s not fancy, down to earth, and nice staff makes you feel welcome. Check out the crazy volcano roll! It’s a massive heap of crab salad on top of a full sized roll. Please stay in business for a long long time because you’re now our favorite sushi spot in San Mateo!
