Tavern on State

A top three restaurant in New Haven. A waiter at Barcelona restaurant told me and a colleague it was his favorite, and since we are in town for work we thought why not. We were pleasantly surprised! The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and attentive, and helped me pick an awesome cocktail that recently came off the menu that was outstanding (Penicillin with candied ginger garnishment). The duck and brussel sprouts appetizer amazing, but the whole fish and the pork shank entrees knocked me off my feet with their robust flavor and texture. The shank had a crispy skin that paired very well with the cabbage and beans it sat in. The entire place was small and rustic with a hipster vibe.

Went for brunch. I wish the menu had a little bit of an explanation as to what some of the dishes were. Not everyone is worldly... and if servers are busy you hate to bother them. The burger was outstanding! I will be going there for dinner soon. The funky drink menu looks awesome as well. I recommend it highly.

Excellent brunch, pork belly hash and caviar tots are highlights, great drink selection too. Excited to try for dinner. One slight suggestion is to broaden the hot sauce selection. One of best places in New Haven

Chef Emily has a store of incredible talent that she is unleashing to the world and it will only get better. We ate 6 items and every dish was as unique as it was beautifully executed. When the dish requires boldness there is no hesitation and when it intends to be light you will be offered something clean and crisp. The textures she offers are very intentional and well thought out. From the octopus (best I ever had) to the duck confit, one could not hope for a better preparation. Her staff is upbeat, friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Just go.

This is in my neighborhood and I just recently discovered the restaurant. It's a hidden gem, I think, for the time being! They just opened this summer and are a female-owned, cozy, high quality eatery and bar.

From starter to dessert to even coffee drinks, the folks at Tavern left nothing to be desired. I dream of the next time we go to eat here because it was just that splendid.
