Stopped in on a whim. Ordered the French onion soup, and hush puppies. Portions, in my opinion are perfectly sized. The quality was really good. Also had the Macon burger and Mac & cheese. My dinner companion said he would eat the Macon Burger with collard greens again, would even make it at home. And the Mac & cheese was fresh and creamy. Definitely worth the trip and cost.
This is my favorite spot. I recommend going for dinner instead of lunch as their selection is not very good (yet). You must try their biscuits and coconut cake. #romantic #localspot
In a city saturated with culinary ambition, Macon Bistro and Larder achieves the rare ability to pleasantly surprise in unexpected ways. Even the most critical customers won’t deny this being the case, whether it be the small touches such as the selection of glassware choices, the creative play on common beverages that they are served in, or the culinary comfort food options each menu tailors itself concertedly, every patron will find themselves taking away something positively unique from experience.
I have been to Macon Bistro and Larder twice in the last two weeks for breakfast and dinner. For breakfast, I had the biscuits and gravy which were a delightful blend of french and southern American styles. The french press coffee was exactly the elixir needed to wake up and get the day going. For dinner two weeks later we shared the deviled eggs appetizer (get them, seriously, they are so good) and we both had the bistro filet which was cooked perfectly to order. We had to plead for our check but that was very much in the European style which we thought was charming. The service at both meals was very good. There are so many other things to try on the menu for any meal that we will definitely be back.
Authentic Southern recipes (the family comes from Macon, GA) make for a fantastic brunch. Fried chicken, perfect cheese grits, biscuits, deviled eggs, fried okra that isn't breaded, thick cut bacon, waffles with pepper jelly and maple syrup... getting the idea? Sparkling water for no charge is a nice touch. French press coffee is just right. Comfy indoors and a pleasant patio for people watching. Full bar. Friendly service. You won't leave hungry. Typical DC prices but better quality for the money than almost anywhere in town. Owner Ellen is a hoot!
