Sitting outside overlooking Lake Sumpter is very pleasant. Our server, Dana, was excellent! She noticed that the portion of Grouper was small and she'd already arranged for another one to come out without us saying anything. She was also attentive and pleasant. The food was all fresh and delicious.
Awesome food. Great service. Went on a Wednesday evening at 6:45pm. No wait and was able to sit outside.
I went with my in-laws who lack any empathy for hard working wait staff always demanding a table that is open without knowing the current situation of the restaurant.
That being said our host was the owners young son and he handled my father-in-law with level of experience that all hostesses should aspire to.
So good job buddy keep up the good work!
Love this place food is good and employees are nice. Our server this time wasn't the greatest but the others were friendly and they sing you a song if its your birthday! It's located in what the lovely locals call "the square" which is a really nice place to go. Sits right on the water with a beautiful view
RJ Gators is a nice restaurant at Lake Sumter Landing in The Villages, FL.
On our most recent visit, we arrived about 7:30 on a Friday evening. The place was busy, but not terribly crowded. We waited for about 15 minutes before being seated.
The service was relatively prompt, although we did have to wait a while for our meal to arrive. It took almost 30 minutes, which given the crowd was not really necessary. So I'm assuming the kitchen was running behind.
We ordered the she crab bisque fried alligator, and RJ Burger. The she crab was flavorful and tasty, although it was quite thick, even for a bisque. The wife had never tried the alligator before, and she enjoyed it. If you've never had gator, it tastes a lot like chicken (with a very slight fishy taste), but has the consistency/texture of shrimp or lobster tail. The RJ burger was just that..a burger. Definitely nothing to write home about, and in fact, the meat could have been seasoned a lot more. Unfortunately, it was rather flavorless.
The wait staff was pleasant, but not overly friendly. And, again, it took quite a while for the food to arrive. The menu has also increased the prices since the last visit, so it's getting a bit expensive to visit. The portion sizes were reasonable.
All in all, a nice visit and a decent place, but nothing spectacular to write home about. Other than a special occasion, I don't know that I would make this a regular place to eat at. Other than the novelty of eating alligator (or frogs legs if you so choose), there's just simply nothing to make this place stand out.
