OK. Only in the South!
We pulled up a day early and they were not open until tomorrow. We are in the parking lot looking for alternative choices when the guy cutting the grass stops what he is doing to come talk with us. We are on motorcycles and it is hot, he opens up the place to offer us the restroom and to wash up. Then says, let me make you something to eat and grab a drink.
So we are now sitting in air conditioning, he heats up up some BBQ sandwiches, dishes out potato salad, chips, and drinks. Joins us for great conversation and refuses payment since they are leftovers. Let me tell you, IF the leftovers taste this great; I can't wait to see what the fresh ribs and BBQ are like! This gentleman turns out to be the owner (Darvin) along with his trusted side kick Doc. The Southern hospitality, great food, and local conversation can only be had in The Land of Dixie. This is a testament that there are still Good People out there. If you are even remotely in the area, stop by and enjoy.
Southern hospitality at it's finest! The staff here are down to earth and a pleasure. We had the pulled chicken/pork and the marinated ribs. All was excellent. I value a true BBQ restaurant that has a real pit and actually has real wood smoke flavor. From my own personal experience in the restaurant industry, a lot of BBQ restaurants just bake pork shoulders and add liquid smoke. Not this restaurant. If you want true authentic southern bbq, you've come to the right place.
Wife's family has been coming here since she was a child, so we finally stopped in last time we were passing through.
Apparently this is a very popular place, as they were out of ribs and some other things when we got there early afternoon.
I had the beef BBQ with Chile slaw on it. GREAT sandwich, and that have many different sauces, I liked them all but the smoky was my favorite.
My wife had the BBQ salad, she really enjoyed that.
Place has a lot of character and local charm.
Definitely a place to visit and enjoy the food and atmosphere.
Highly recommend.
Really good barbecue! Hometown favorite and popular tourist destination, great food meets southern hospitality at Poole's. This place is no frills: paper plates, plastic forks, napkins come on a roll, but what it does have is fantastic grub. Slow smoked meats piled high, excellent sides, and knockout desserts, the only thing you will leave here wanting is more (and maybe a nap). The people here are long-time locals and always a delight. Great food, a cool locale, and simple charm make Poole's a regular stop for me.
Finally stopped by for BBQ after passing it on the Hwy for many, many years! It was truly delicious! BBQ was so flavorful, great stew, great fries, okra and slaw! Why on Earth did we wait so long? Good prices and friendly staff! I will be back next trip up!!!
