Hole-in-the-wall in Kalihi. Authentic, genuine local food made with aloha. Sooo ono. If you're on Oahu, you MUST come try. Pastele (pronounced pah-tel-ay) is one of the foods you have to try if you're visiting Hawaii. Also, splurge and get a few banana lumpia for dessert. Good prices too! And the lady who runs the front of house is super sweet.
Our first time was good, second time was meh, third time was bad. Its hit or miss here, wonder if they have the same cook that makes the pasteles. The pastele stew is good but salty, gandule rice could use a little more umph. I come from a family of Puerto Ricans and we make the best but since my Granpa died we have been around looking for other options.
Best place to get Pastele, Gonduti Rice Bacalao Salad, Ponadecia Pastele Lumpia Banana Lumpia
A very cool little restaurant away from Waikiki. The place has been making great pasteles for 30 years. Parking is limited as well as seating inside. It's a short drive from Waikiki and is very much worth it. Super friendly service. Bite squad friendly.
