Where do I begin? My Mother decided to surprise my husband and I with a childless night and a room to celebrate our Anniversary. She thought that she had reserved our favorite room at Knapp's Narrows, but instead reserved us a room at The Tilghman Inn.

We stopped by our favorite local spots, when they asked where we were staying everyone stopped to look at us like we were crazy. "That place has been vacant for years" they'd all explain. So we decided to go take a look and see for ourselves.

We pulled into an empty parking lot execpt for an old broke down Jeep that had clearly been there for quite some time. The awning was ripped off. The hedges untrimmed. The place surely looked abandoned.

We went in. To our surprise there was a card on the front desk with our name on it. And bars up blocking the doorway to the restaurant. No power was on at all.

Open the card and it tells us our key will be waiting for us on our bed. Ok then. We go through scary doors, through a door that says "KEEP LOCKED SHUT" and enter a hallway that looks like there may be a set of twins at the end of it at any second. So we decided to go in and check out our room. At this point I've pulled out every weapon and shiv I could make out of the contents of my purse.

Our room was incredibly clean. It was a gorgeous view. There was power in our room. There was running water and a clean bathroom. There was a working fire place. There was a chair that fit under the door handle. And it was quiet. And as scary as this place was, we have 4 wonderful and very loud children, dogs, cat and a variety of farm animals and neighborhood children that I can't write off, so the quiet was a welcome sound....

We left to go to dinner. Everyone at the bar was happy to see us. They asked where we were staying and when we said the Tilghman Inn the entire bar literally fell silent. Silent. Everyone told us again "that place has been vacant for years!".

I call Knapp's Narrows. No Vacancy. Awesome.

We go back to our room. It's dark. There's some man with long hair and a white stained undershirt sitting in a white truck with the interior lights on next to the building. I grab a screwdriver, my purse made prison shank (I think) and a fork I took from dinner for protection. When we got out he pulled up fast in front of the building and got out with a hedge trimmer in hand. I can't even begin to tell you how I felt about this.

Apparently he was the "grounds keeper". He chatted for a few minutes after putting the hedge trimmer down and wished us a good evening and we went to our scary room. We put the chair against the door and had a few beers and my Husband slept like a baby. I laid awake with a large fork and watched the beautiful sunrise...

We then went downstairs the next morning and the bars were down from the restaurant and there was frozen fruit in a bowl, some cereal and hot coffee placed on a table. No power. Dark bathroom. Beautiful view. Empty. Clean.

This place is an experience all it's own. It's like Scooby Doo, just actually scary, because it's real and there are boats close by to take you to drop you in the ocean. But there was no check out time which was nice. And again, the place was clean. So I don't know exactly how to explain. Would I go back? Probably not. I think I'll pass. I wouldn't consider my time there restful. But there was nothing wrong with the room itself.
