Hate giving them 3 stars, this was a great dive bar with good grub. The place looks no different but we waited so long for our food I finally had to cancel the order. 2 guys in a little cooking area and they couldn't get out of their own way. No such thing as "Short Order Cook" that night. Maybe their was training going on but my food hadn't even made the grill yet and I'd already downed 2 Beers, slowly...I'll go back some time and see if they can get some stars back..
This is a great bar if you love the divey atmosphere. The wait staff is helpful but not in your face, and the drinks are insanely strong. Have always loved coming here.
Disregard any and all reviews of restaurants serving burgers. This is the best one in Salem and maybe the North shore. I've never been let down. When it gets busy it can be a long wait for food. Ordering your burger with combination of onion rings and fries makes it a wonderful place.
I'm pleased and proud to call the Major's my "local." This neighborhood pub, often half-full of folks from Salem, is a zero-BS establishment. Cozy and quaint, but not hokey nor provincial. The mixed drinks are so heartily poured that I'm glad I live only a couple of blocks away. It's kid-friendly in the way that the crowd tends to be mature enough to be respectful with their language, and the appetizers are very generous, which my kid and I enjoy splitting. The Major's burgers, cooked to order, could define the standard of a perfect "pub burger." (Only one time, when the place was packed with customers, did they overcook my burger, but I'm not gonna dock them a whole star for that.) The staff is local, and the casual visitor may not suspect how utterly cool they are. (I'll attach a picture of one of the waitresses' fresh House Stark tattoo.) It's not common in New England to run into wait staff with whom you can discuss Tennant's vs. Capaldi's performance as The Doctor. Great place for an after-work drink, some honest food, and to watch the Bruins game--although on game nights the Major's can get pretty full. Their seafood chowder and chili are excellent, and make for perfect comfort food on rainy/windy/snowy North Shore days. In short, this place makes me feel happy.
This is a great Neighborhood pub, great food, amazing ribs, and very friendly staff! Not a dive bar, and not a trendy place, but a great mix of happy people! (The butter in my chowder is my doing, best way to eat it!)
