Ok, I happen to think that East Lansing is a food desert devoted to the undeveloped taste buds of college students. Sparty's is a wonderful find. I had the kebab entree with grilled vegetables, okra, salad, rice, and hummus. All of it was spectacular. It was fresh, flavorful, well prepared, and healthy! My spouse had the lamb shank entree and traditional rice and he raved that the shank was the best he had in many a year. Go to this restaurant. There is spice in the dishes so a bit of heat is to be expected. I am a convert and will return. I will consider this my new favorite restaurant!
Spartys Kabob was a terrific little family owned restaurant, and they claim to be distinctively Iraqi cuisine, with different entrees than the other mediterrenian restaurants in the area. They certainly have good kabobs, and the lamb shank was super tender. It was quiet when we were there, and since we got there during closing time, our salad selection wasn't the best, but man, the kabobs were good and so was their rice. The Okra soup was poured over the rice and it soaked in to form a great flavor and texture. Overall very good with generous portions for the price. We will put this one on our "must visit again" list.
My husband and I tried this for the first time today. It was warm and inviting inside The owner is enthusiastic about his heritage and what he makes and sells. He explained all of the selections before we ordered. Rayan encouraged sampling, and gave hefty portion sizes. My husband enjoyed the lamb and chicken kabob, I had the vegan kabob and really liked it. The eggplant salad was interesting and delicious, the bean stew was great, I tried the okra, apparently I don’t like okra ?♀️.
We look forward to returning and trying some of the other offerings we didn’t get to.
Our meals consisted of a whole lamb shank and a whole chicken leg, not processed chunks. The hummus was excellent. The food was flavorful but not too spicy. Save room for dessert. This place is excellent. I highly recommend it and will keep coming back. Also, it is very reasonably priced.
I was really happy with my meal! You get generous portions and the price feels like it's appropriate. Their proteins were absolutely incredible (get the lamb shank, it was the best I've ever had), the rice was quite good and the eggplant salad was also solid. On the other hand, the humus wasn't my favorite, and the grilled veggies were well seasoned but a little lackluster, likely because I came in half an hour before close. It appears to be a family owned restaurant, and the staff were very friendly! Despite having a couple things that weren't quite amazing, I am certainly going to return and highly recommend that you give it a try!
