I went in and ordered a Filet-O-Fish Sandwich and a six-count package of Chicken McNuggets. That's it. I ate those inside; then went for a walk.
They built this location back in 1988 and opened it in 1989.
Beforehand, the franchisee chose that particular spot, apparently because of Redford High School's location at 21431 Grand River and the students who attended it.
Which wasn't to say that adults, especially with children, wouldn't stop in to get a bite, but apparently, teen-agers oftentimes purchase fast food---much more than adults. So this franchisee knew what they were doing, but they had to comply with Detroit's Zoning Ordinances and place their restaurant a certain amount of hundreds of feet away from a school.
In this case, Redford High School.
Initially, there was some opposition, especially from the owner of Albert's Hamburgers, who chided McDonald's, basically accusing them of thinking of themselves "as some great American restaurant," whereas he thought otherwise of them.
I still think about that and observe the point of view on his part. His place did serve burgers and probably was the only burger joint in that area. Yes, competition is a monster. One instant, you're a big fish in a very big pond; the next instant another fish gets in "your" pond. And it's actually bigger---and swallows you entirely!
Poor Albert's Hamburgers.
Earlier this decade, back in '10, I visited the Old Redford area and discovered the burger joint closed.
Three decades later, McDonald's is still going strong in that location. And the place was renovated; I don't know when. It just looks beautiful inside.
Unfortunately, the doors don't provide accessibility for wheelchairs. I hope they remedy that very soon.
