Callahan hot dogs are unique, they capture the authentic taste of the BEST hot dogs from the palisades Era pre-80z era, we'll worth the trip, and an excellent experience.
Fries are out of this world. Hot dogs are average at best. Too salty. Chili sauce is great though. Grilled chicken sandwich is a hit or miss. Wings are amazing, albeit overpriced.
Edit: after multiple additional orders after my review, I must say the hot dogs are pretty damn good. At the very least, unique. It’s fried (at least it tastes like it was fried) so it has a different taste than regular hot dogs. Wings have been on the decline however. Do you reheat or refry Wings now? Doesn’t taste as good as it used to. Sauce is still great though. Oh and order double portions of the chili sauce since they give you extremely small portions (note the price is extremely cheap, which makes up for it)
The vibe of the place is fun. The cheese burger is really good. The Mac and cheese burger does need more flavor.. a small addition of acid/heat will bring that dish over the edge.
But the most entertaining part is reading replies from the owner to bad google reviewers! “I’m sorry you hate our food, but we have been making hot dogs since 100 B.C., and our burger was voted number #3 on the planet Mars. Here is the name of a ENT doctor to get your taste buds checked out for any medical conditions hindering you from enjoying our food. Email me for a free burger once you have been diagnosed!”
I grew up in Union City in the 60s and a visit to the original Callahan's in Fort Lee was a must whenever we went to Palisades Amusement Park...the dogs, the fries, and the condiments bar were all terrific and I missed them for many years until I moved to the Fort Lee area and rediscovered how much I loved the place... I stopped there about once a week for the last 5 years of their existence and was very disappointed when they closed...fast forward to the new Callahan's startup as a food truck and eventually a storefront, guided by Dan, grandson of the original owner, and his amazing crew...the deep-fried jersey style dogs are the same ones the old Callahan's made and they're perfect...Callahan's is making a name for themselves on the foodie circuit with a number of super creative items like their seasonal Flaming Hot Cheetos crusted soft shell crab sandwich but when I stop in it's for a well-done doggie and fries - just like back in the 60s...
Best burgers ever! Good service and great food. Good portion for the price.
