We came for our first time on a May Saturday afternoon around 4 (highly recommend this time) with our 1 year old son and it was a cool, quiet ambiance - not too busy - and were greeted warmly by the host and the owner. I’d describe the atmosphere as classy, cool, nautical, and modern with minimalist decor and sports on TVs. Great place for an early dinner with the family, I’d say.
Our server Jose was incredibly professional, attentive, and kind. His food recommendations were hits! Bonus points for bringing us extra napkins and our son extra straws to play with then drop on the floor.
We started with Salmon Deviled Eggs and Hush Puppies! The honey butter that comes with the hush puppies was a delicious sweet addition. Highly recommend Hush Puppies.
I had the Charred Octopus and it was on point. Just a little char to give the edges a crisp bite before penetrating the juicy meat of the octopus tentacle. It was a big tentacle I might add. Our son loved the gigante beans that came in the tasty gumbo mix below the octopus. Chorizo had many pieces and a good bit of spice in it that made me reach for my Dogfish 60 minute IPA.
My wife had the lobster roll (Maine Style) cold, and had all good things to say about it + would order it again. The only thing that would make it better was toasting the roll and smothering it with butter!
The head Chef, Matt Boffa, hand-delivered our meals, introduced himself and told us a little bit more about the dishes we ordered, preparation, seasonings, and most importantly about the fresh sourcing of their seafood. He even made our son a fresh grilled chicken cutlet! Everyone was Super outgoing and welcoming to our baby boy so we’ll definitely be back cuz it’s hard to find a good family friendly restaurant.
Lastly was the banana pudding…. When we weren’t going to get dessert, Jose shared the dessert menu with us just to look and we’re glad we did because the banana pudding was just the right small treat for all 3 of us to share before the drive home.
Only areas of improvement are to consider toasting the lobster roll bun, and
Overall, 5 stars for the high quality seafood entree combinations, and we will be back (with friends) to Union Boil!
This place has so much potential. I wish I could rate it a 5 star. Service was fine, but the food was lacking and prices high. Gumbo was too dark and thick. I know gumbo, and this version was poor. Lobster roll needed more dressing. The roll could have made up for it, but it wasn't soft and buttery like a good roll should be.
We both had entrees, so I might be back to try to boil. I want to love it for the bar and location. Hopefully they'll tweak the menu or improve the cookery. It's expensive, so it should be great.
Childs hamburger is good. The deviled egg was the favorite thing I ate. Pretzel was good, but nothing special.
Decor needs some work…our main dishes were each $28- gumbo and scallops. The gumbo had 2 pieces of thin sausage and 2 shrimp. The scallops consisted of 4 small pieces- about 80% of the plate were the small roasted potatoes. Both plates came out room temperature, not even warm. Apps were good, but the mains need major work.
So happy to see how busy they are on their first week! The entire staff were super cheerful and truly cared about your experience.
We got cocktails and wine. All were delicious!
We got the hush puppies and pretzel board for appetizers. Hush puppies were okay. Definitely needed a lot of the honey butter. I’m not a pretzel person and I loved the pretzel! So good!
We were three people and got the little boil to share. When it came out we were worried it wouldn’t be enough but it was PLENTY! Everything was so fresh. So tasty!
We got the chocolate chip cookie for dessert. I was kinda hoping for an ooey gooey cookie but it was still good!
We needed a seafood spot! Happy addition to the town!
Definitely worth checking out.
