Its actually 5 stars for the ambiance, amazing line up of tv screens and atmosphere for watching sports. But, its only 3 stars for the food. It really needs improvement, not only the selection in the menu, but the quality and taste. In the pictures is my carnitas tacos, which I would have expected with pieces of steak, pan seared; instead I got some pulled beef that seemed to have been boiled maybe?! We were 5 watching the world cup, and the others had similar problems with their food. Still, I think it is a great place to watch sports, just be flexible about your culinary expectations.
Food and service were excellent. The atmosphere was ok. It was a Saturday night with a live band, crowded and loud. I'm old so this should only factor into your giving it a shot if you're an older person. I have to give it to the wait staff; 5 stars on their game. I'll try again in the daytime because the food and service was that great.
Visiting Santa Fe for the first time with my daughter. I have Celiac disease & have a hard time finding a restaurant that is safe for me to eat at as even the slightest crumb of gluten will make me terribly sick. Found Boxcar with Google & let me tell you it was AMAZING! Our server was Allen & he went above & beyond to accommodate my Celiac disease. He made recommendations for the bang bang shrimp appetizer & the shrimp & grits entree. As the shrimp & grits are not labeled as being able to be gluten free, he contacted the head chef who wasn’t even working at the time to find a way for me to enjoy this dish! I’ve never felt so important & understood. I usually get the eye roll from servers when I explain that things have to prepared carefully. I usually don’t even try to go out to eat because of that. Allen was awesome & I appreciate his attentiveness so very much! The bang bang shrimp & the shrimp & grits were incredible!!!! The kitchen staff was the fastest I think I’ve ever had when dining out!!!! Boxcar should definitely be a place you go to when in Santa Fe!!! We are only here for 4 days but we will dine here again before we leave!!!!
If you like a collegey sports bar type place, you'll like it here. Nothing gourmet about the place, but solid food. Green Chile cheeseburger was cooked correctly, fries were good though I wish there were a few more. Service was fast. I had the Chile margarita, definitely spicy but was a bit too sour. They use a house sweet and sour mix, so not sure what that means or if it comes in a packet. But the balance was off here. These are probly worth it during happy hour, $5 I think, but not for the normal $12. Alternatively just a little adjustment can bring these up to par. Contact me for complimentary margarita consulting and feedback. Beer prices are better, a few in the $4-5 pint range. Would go back if I'm in the area and want a quick bite.
