Houseman is a nice American restaurant.
The service was friendly and efficient.
The ambiance is relaxed, and the place is relatively small and quiet.
The food was all okay to good, with one dish being great.
The okay:
The “fried uglies”- basically fried potatoes with ’middle eastern’ spices. Not bad, but a bit dry. These would, in my opinion, benefit from a sort of dipping sauce.
The good:
My skate dinner. The fish was flavorful and had a nice, mild sauce accompanying it and the potatoes it came plated with. Just a note/warning, the skate does have bones, and lots of them. Basically the bottom of the skate is bones. You can easily pry the meat off though and enjoy.
The great:
A shrimp salad with chilis and nuts. This salad was a perfect blend of spicy and savory, and had a great combo of textures. I highly recommend this if they’re still serving it when you go.
On a random note, Malcolm Gladwell was dining in the restaurant alone on the night I went with a bunch of papers on his table.
Pretty average overall. Nice modern atmosphere. Food was mixed at best and I hoped for more. The skate was absolutely awful, soggy. I’d say inedible. The chicken dish was good with a spicy kick. The burger was fine. Carrots were good and the fries good too. Maybe we had an off night.
Very good food, excellent service. Small plates were delicious, good main courses, terrific desserts. Very good wine selections. Definitely will visit again.
Easily the best fries I've ever eaten. Ever. Add to a perfectly cooked steak and you're in good shape.
Great casual spot! We came right at the end of brunch and it was super quiet. Our waitress was really kind and did a great job breaking down the menu and her recommendations for us! The pizza eggs are their take on shakshuka (baked eggs in a tomato sauce dressed up based on the description). We got the burger and the Italian sausage pizza eggs. Highly recommend both!
