Shock alert: I love meat. In fact, I make fun of my vegan niece by pointing out humans have canine teeth (let it go Uber vegans).
Anyway, I am seeing the potential error in my ways and heard good things about this place, so visited with vegan friends ....
Dang. This is good. First, it's an old style diner. Then they've taken the dishes and given them a vegan twist. Really inventive. You have a style and then choose a protein.
It's kind of a hybrid thing. For the non vegans it provides a gateway to show that it isn't all mung beans and kale. While I'm not ready to give up the ribs and brisket just yet, I could easily eat here and not realize it's vegan.
Really yummy Vegan diner food. I'm thankful for GF options. My only thing is that I wish they had almond milk. Otherwise it's a great place & the staff is friendly & welcoming.
Went here for a New Years birthday celebration dinner. Really laid back and chill restaurant. Love that everything is vegan and actually tastes pretty decent! As a meat eater I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food.
I ordered the Tony Hawk burger with gluten free bun and the field roast (beef style) patty, it was amazing and their in house made “vertical sauce” (fry sauce) was pretty bomb.
My sister got the Ian Mackaye burger that was a Mac and cheese burger with a patty of choice, also delicious! Definitely a place to go for good burgers/sandwiches.
They offer breakfast as well! The birthday girl got a peanut butter brownie and I couldn’t even tell it was vegan, so delicious!
Something that would be nice to see is calories or macros on their menu, or describe what certain plant-based meat substitutes are made of for those who don’t know.
Will come back again!
So delighted that I finally stopped in to the Vertical Diner! I grew up eating at diners just like this one, and to find one that offers a completely vegan menu is a godsend. Their menu is extensive, a bit overwhelming actually. We wound up deciding to order one breakfast dish and one lunch dish and sharing them. The biscuits and gravy, known as the Bombastic, was perfect. Biscuits were fluffy, gravy was flavorful and plentiful. The Joaquin Phoenix Burger was also delicious. I chose a Field Roast Patty, but they have other house-made options available. They serve great coffee with free refills, as well. Service was great; exceedingly friendly and efficient. Honestly, I think this place is a gem, and a welcome addition to Portland's dining scene. It will definitely become part of our regular rotation!
Oh my GOSH. So dang good. I brought my husband, son and I here for breakfast for dinner this last weekend. I can't even explain in words how delicious the food is. We will be frequenting this place often. It is so nice to have another vegan option in the area, and with parking! The staff was extremely courteous, and the service was stellar. Can't wait to come back!
