My husband and in-laws were in town for a concert at the Newberry auditorium. The town is very quaint; we were excited to try the independent restaurants on Main Street. This place looked very eclectic and promising so we stopped in for brunch on a Sunday. The guy at the hostess booth wasn't friendly at all; it all went down hill from there. He sat us at a booth, handed us our menus and took our drink order. He came back to give us our drinks and take our order. That was pretty much the last time we saw him. There was a couple sitting right behind us that he would check in on but never checked on us to refill our drinks or ask if there was anything we needed. We constantly had to get another waitress to fill our drinks. My father-in-law tried numerous times to flag the guy down because he was blatantly ignoring us and that didn't even work. He would just walk by, completely ignoring us. Meanwhile, the other waitress was having to work harder to service our table on top of her other customers while the guy was just sitting around doing absolutely nothing. The food was good but the poor service left a bad taste in our mouths. If we're ever in town again, we will NEVER eat at this restaurant due to the poor service provided. This guy looked bored and like he didn't want to be at work. It's a shame that this restaurant has so much potential but with customer service like this, makes you not want to step foot in the place. While we were sitting there, we had to practically beg for our bill. It was so bad that we probably could have walked off and they wouldn't have noticed but we're not the type to eat and run. While we waited for the bill, a couple gentlemen had to walk up to the hostess booth and wait there until a waitress acknowledged them so they could request their bill. If you decide to eat here, be forewarned and good luck to you!
Post Review: I posted a comment regarding the poor service on their FaceBook page. I received a quick response apologizing for the server's behavior and that this experience would be addressed immediately. Thanks for the quick response. We were invited to return to the restaurant to see the progress. If we're ever in the area, we will give the restaurant another chance.
This place is excellent! Excellent food (especially but not limited-to maybe the best pizzas you will ever eat), excellent beverage selection (this small college town eatery will shock you with their well chosen list of fresh local and regional microbrewery ales and lagers), and excellent service (met one of the nicest young ladies, her name is Shannon I believe and she was the epitome of what one might expect from professional, friendly, knowledgeable floor staff ... she made us happy - we tipped her big. Oh, and excellent decor - plus even the music was outstanding! Listen, all their pizzas are good as is everything on their menu (evident by the crowds they pack-into the place during peak hours) but you gotta try The Foz. Oh, and the salads, the sandwiches, etc ... our Son attends the local college so we've made this our new favorite place when we travel there. Seems like parents and students and locals alike all agree about The Flying Pie. I cannot recommend it highly enough because Google only allows me to rate it 5 Stars ... it deserves 6.
I have always received great service for delectable food. They have a great selection of craft beers. I've been there for lunch a couple times and brunch several times. I'm sorry to hear of bad experience from other reviewers. Their pizza is amazing! Their brunch is even better! The creme brule French toast is awesome and their shrimp on a cloud take on shrimp and grits is worth the drive. Also their blood orange mimosa is great!
