After a short visit to Laos my friends and I were eager to try this place (lots of great background info on the owner/chef on D Magazine’s website as well). This was a really fun and great place to sample small plates and bowls of Lao food, interesting flavor combinations and different broths and sauces. The chef even accommodated our vegetarian friend (as Lao food has lots of meat-based dishes). Be sure to try the tripe chicharron!!!
Very unique and one of a kind place to eat in Dallas. Every small plate was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. Staff was helpful in explaining the menu and unique flavors to us first timers. Shrimp bites and the dipping sauce were????!
Beef skewers were small, chewy and burnt. Boat noodles were all noodle and very little soup, flavor was really good though but was not impressed at all with the noodles. Tripe chicharrones were very delicious, our favorite dish. The jerky was decent. Ordered pickled greens but never saw them, need to check the receipt. Server was good. Won't be back based on this experience. The sausage was only half of it, and diced, it was decent sausage but not much creativity here for me.. There was some sort of sushi bite with pork patty wrapped in rice that was actually good. I ordered everything that sounded remotely good but did not like half of it and the menu is so limited there is essentially nothing left to try.
Very fun restaurant, cozy and clean dining. The food on the other hand is really what you will be coming back to experience. What a splendid menu with very pocket friendly prices. The service? Not notch, not overbearing or irritating, but kind, thoughtful and attentive at every point of contact. I highly recommend #KhaoNoodleShop for those times when you want the experience that makes you feel really special.
I read about Khao in this month's issue of D Magazine, and from reading the article I had to give it a try. I was completely impressed. The food was so flavorful, fresh and well prepared. Everything I had was amazing. The Boat Noddles which is their signature dish, was off the charts. I love the pickled greens and the smokey taste of the wood fired sausage. Chef Donny really knows his way around the kitchen. The food comes in small portions, so I recommend trying different things.
