Flaky buttery croissant.... not bad but very pricey.... won’t sell specialty cakes by the slice. Look soo good but kinda hurt my feelings I couldn’t buy it by the slice; but that’s my fault get a better job then I can eat whole cake that I buy form this place. I ordered a triple chocolate cookie. Before I could eat it the wife did some gangster stuff and broke a piece of it off and when I said “hey buddy” she said “who bought this? Not you broke boy”.... second time feelings were hurt but it’s cool because triple chocolate chunk was my favorite. The purple macaroons tasted purple, the red ones tasted red, and the blue ones tasted blue; very accurate. I good place to buy sweets if you’re a baller!
Breaking down my review of Common Bond:
Cakes and tarts: 4 stars
Pastries and cookies: 2 stars
Coffee: 4 stars
Common Bond is a very popular bakery in Houston and after going many times, I think it merits the popularity in their cakes and coffee.
However, every time I get pastries there I have been highly unsatisfied. Personally I believe the filled pastries to be overfilled, to the point the croissant flavor and craftsmanship is lost to the amount of Nutella or pistachio or almond filling. The fillings are also extremely sweet. The cookies also overly sweet and dry.
If you are looking for a simple croissant or pastry, know that their fillings are extremely "extra". Their pastries are very photogenic and will look great on social media, but the taste to me is not on par with the appearance.
I would like to love this place since it is so popular but Houston has high standards for food and I think Common Bond just needs to cut down on the amount of sweetener and filling they use.
Saw an interview with common bond CEO the other day and they had a photo of the pistachio croissants and it looked very tasty so we decided to give the bakery a try, the reality was even better, the croissants tasted great and although they were serving only Americano coffee, cause we went late, but it was pretty good as well. The children loved the cheese sandwiches with tomato soup as well.
Staff were super friendly and place were very clean with a lot of hand sanitizer stations.
I would recommend this place as a stop at any time they open. I know that we going back for sure.
