After giving it a few goes, we have found the hype to be overrated—Tropicales is a bit confusing as it tries to serve food in a “high-end” fashion but with a casual vibe and then serve a smorgasbord of everything. Is it a bar? Is it a cafe? Is it for breakfast/brunch or dinner? In the end, the weird theme that tries to be different makes the service confusing, probably for the waiters too. The restaurant itself is beautiful and well-decorated, the staff are nice, and the drinks are indeed well-done, but the food side is average quality.
Although food comes out quickly, it is not fresh and feels as if pre-made bowls were put together (the Big Bend Rice Bowl especially...) and thrown in the microwave for a couple seconds before being plated nicely before you. Good presentation, but OK tasting food; the flavor palette from the bacon and cheese croissant could have easily been from any fast-food establishment which makes the price tag grossly overpriced. If we return, it will only be for drinks.
We were warmly welcomed into this bright and clean restaurant yesterday morning. The place is nicely decorated and feels high-end, but casual and relaxing at the same time. We chose to sit outside, since we brought our dog, Chip. The staff was very accommodating and brought us a small bowl with water to make sure he was happy. When it comes to our meal, we both ordered the same thing, breakfast tacos. We both chose bacon and egg for the first one and chorizo and egg for the second. They both came with a side of fresh fruit. The plates came out surprisingly quick, were fresh & hot, and delicious. The tacos come with a green sauce on the side that had good flavor, and not too much spice. Having such a great first experience, we will return here again.
Cute place! Ambiance is great and it has a high-end feel to it. Plenty of parking as well as shaded, outdoor seating. I had 1/2 hour to kill before an appointment and stopped in to grab some breakfast, coffee, and get some work done. Tip: outlets are by the bar. I will definitely be back.
I'm so happy I discovered this little hidden gem in my neighborhood! The food is just plain fantastic! Do yourself a favor and try their salmon ceviche w/ plantain chips. It's out of this world.
Excellent neighborhood cafe with a curated variety of Mexican dishes. Tropicales has a great indoor/outdoor space and decent parking right outside with plenty on adjoining streets. There is a good happy hour. Food is served pretty quickly. My favorite item is the yucca fries. There is a water spigot inside so you can refill your glass at any time. I would recommend Tropicales to anyone.
