Alongside the creek that named the place, the Shoal Creek Saloon patio on a sunny day with a basket of seafood (I had catfish and gulf shrimp, lightly fried, with sides of hushpuppies, red beans and rice and slaw) and a frosty cold one can't be beat.
The background music today was especially good, a mix of Dylan and the Dead just right for a sunny afternoon. Raw Gulf Oysters were fresh and flavorful too.
Local stalwarts for all of the 27 years I have been in Austin, they also get points for lots of Saints love and for enduring multiple Creek floods and bouncing back fast to reopen every time. 5 stars.
Shoal Creek has always been a really nice visit. The restaurant interior just plain, the patio is plain but also wonderful. The food is fairly priced, the servings are sizable and the service is good. Keep in mind this is not fancy dining but is a great place to be and eat some really good food.
I’ve had my fair share of gumbo in this lifetime, this one is the best I’ve ever had in Texas, maybe even better than my gumbo experiences in Louisiana! We arrived 5 minutes before they stopped serving food and our server was so incredibly kind and cool- which has been rare to find during the pandemic for last minute 930pm eating!
Get a bowl, because a cup is just a tease it’s so tasty. Kudos to also having Abita on draft!
Outside, attentive and delicious watch the floodwaters of shoal Creek.
