My wife and I live in the neighborhood and frequent all of the best Ghent options, and codex is hands down one of our absolute FAVORITE restaurants in the whole city. They have a genuine wait staff, consistent cooks, and an incredible chef with a fantastic menu. Do yourself a favor and try a little bit of everything! It's all legitimately great????????
Cool experience. We quickly became fans of Pendulum and have heard great things about Codex. We got there at 6:30 on a Friday when it opens without a reservation, and we were seated right away at the big communal table. We had a very lively server who excitedly told us the specials and even better told us about the Veil beers they had available. We had bone marrow (amazing!) and pimento cheese (tasty with cool crackers). 2nd course was chorizo and corn and roasted beet, both of which were great. We shared the special (pork shoulder) for the entree and were too stuffed to have dessert. Can’t wait to go back and have the burger everyone raves about, and more craft beer. We will probably get a reservation next time just to be sure.
The food was amazing. The tomato and burrata toast was so fresh, I didn’t know tomatoes could taste so dang good. The hanger steak was also incredibly delicious, with a variance of flavors with the sweet potatoes and radishes without being overwhelming. The staff was so friendly as well. Most of the seating is the typical table per party, however we were sat at one large table consisting of other parties of 2. It was an awkward arrangement at first but a nice way to chat with other people as you dine. We’ll definitely be back!
I knew to order this, so I was looking forward to a 'best burger' experience. Not disappointed...exceeded expectations. the fingerling potatoes were a huge step above fries. The crabcake I tasted was fabulous. not all 'old bay' standard fare, more fresh than that. The hangar steak was tender and cooked perfectly. Will.be.back! Oh, the staff is a delight, they know how to connect with a friendly vibe and great service.
The food was amazing as well as the service. I loved the atmosphere of the old house with books and things to look at and sauces, jams or mixes to buy. Best meal I've had since I've been here.
