Enjoy the variety of menu and freshness of ingredients Chef Rico Rivera cooks up. Coupled with a dedicated and friendly staff is the perfect combo for a wonderful dinner!!
When I dine out there's a few things I'd like. Of course, the food has to be tasty, but ideally it should be something I wouldn't make myself and bring something new and original to the game. Almond and Oak was firing on all cylinders. Finding good savory vegetarian brunch options for my wife can be difficult, but the root vegetable hash and the wild mushroom quiche were both amazing. The beignets were delicious, though the powdered sugar was piled on a little too high. The atmosphere is rustic and the room can be a little noisy, but it's well worth it.
The vibe in here is great and the servers are wonderful. The location is terrific and it attracts a great eclectic crowd. Those are the positives; if I were grading for food-only, it would be a 3*. It has gone through a couple of incarnations in its post-Me Too life, and this one is simply not daring enough food-wise. Most dishes are competently prepared but nothing just hits you like, "we need to go to Almond and Oak for the....". On top of that the menu is relatively static which would be fine if there those absolute go-tos, but if I were them, I'd experiment a bit to find a dish or two that really grabs.
Food is amazing! The pork shoulder was incredibly tender, and the mashed potatoes are so smooth and fluffy, the chicken is so flavorful all the way through the meat. It's a warm atmosphere inside and friendly staff that are eager to help.
Decor is unchanged from Penrose.
Friendly bartender.
Pretty good food, but somewhat pricey.
Nicely poached eggs. The vegetable hash had good smokey char from their wood fired cooking.
House hot sauce is mild and has a nice brightness.
