I'll admit I was a bit skeptical about the location, since the "specialness" of a restaurant can sometimes get lost when relocating. Happy to report that the delicious BBQ pork noodle roll is still as delicious as I remember! The noodle is light, the BBQ pork is savory and the cilantro added a fresh flavor. At 4.50 for two rolls, it was the perfect summer evening dinner.
They have a pretty good selection of entrees to choose from.
The proteins on display are always ready to be put over rice and served to you. Many of the entrees also come with vegetables on the side as well.
Beef chow fun was tasty, but could have used a tad more soy sauce. Maybe a bit more meat as well. I'd come here again.
The service was a little better than average. The space was small enough that if you raised your hand or tried to get the staff's attention, someone would see you.
The line can be a bit long, but it moves along. Though the lunch hour is understandably longer.
The staff were really nice when I had my dinner here tonight, and the food was super tasty and not greasy. the rice noodle/roll is one of my favorites, and I usually order the pork or beef one. Gum Kuo is the only restaurant is the only one as I know of who serves the pork rice roll, so be sure to try it when you stop by.
This restaurant was recommended a few years ago by a frequent visitor to downtown Oakland Chinatown. I've been here a couple of times and have not been disappointed by the quality and delicious food. There always seems to be a wait to get a table. You might be asked to share a table if they seat you at a large table. Just like being in Hong Kong. Make sure you are ready to order quickly as this place is small and very busy. You definitely do not want to flag a server down. Oh, almost forgot to mention that at the front of the restaurant you'll find sort of a cooked meat butcher shop serving roast pork, char siu, roast duck, roasted pig and parts all delicious. You should brave the lines and dine here.
My freaking favorite Chinese restaurant in the East Bay!
Get the porridge with Chinese donut. Sprinkle some white pepper. Great for rainy cold days where you just need some comfort food. Noodle soups here are great for that too.
Rice rolls are hand made! I prefer the cilantro one.
