Go early if you want a great table or booth. We finally got in with reservations which is recommended. The ambiance and decor are really nicely done. We came here for the food and were not disappointed. We could have just ate the warm tortilla chips 2 kinds of salsa and the warm black beans. Our waitress knew the menu well and suggested the CARNE NORTEÑA which had steak , chimichanga and chicken enchilada. All were very good and a good way to try a little bit of everything. Next we had the CABO SHRIMP which had nice sized shrimps with citrus white rice and garlic bread for the sauce. We would order that dish again! Beside Nick's in Del Mar this is a great addition to restaurants in One Paseo!
We always loved the original Nick's next door so tried there new Mexican location "South of Nicks". Atmosphere was very trendy and would love to go hang out in the bar area by the firepit. We had our kids with us so we sat inside. Started with drinks which were the highlight, smokey pineapple and Tamarindo margaritas. Chips and salsa came to the table as well and were fresh and crisp. The guacamole was nothing memorable. The mains we had a mole enchilada and the divorcarios enchilada. Both dishes were not to hot and had definitely been sitting for sometime. Mole was the highlight though and had great flavor, would recommend. Overall the service was sorta slow, but not too suprising for a new opening while they work out kinks. Overall the price it commands was not quite on par with its peers in the same price range (Javiers, Puesto).
Would still recommend for high end mexican in the del mar area.
South of Nick’s is a home run! Been dining at Nick’s for years, this new spot is amazing! Fresh Skinny Marg so tasty. Carnitas plate over the top. Crispy juicy and so flavorful. Tortilla soup very hearty and delicious. Service at the bar with Amber and Claudia can’t be beat. 5 ✨✨✨✨✨
South of Nick's is just as great as Nick's next door- IF NOT BETTER. The food is exceptional, as were the drinks. The servers are ON IT, knowledgeable and go above and beyond. The food we had was so fresh, and the portions were HUGE. I genuinely cannot pick a favorite- because it was all amazing.
My husband believes the steak he had was better than Island Prime $100 steak. The salsas and dips were also some of the best I have had.
If you are looking for exceptional service and exceptional Mexican food- South of Nick's is the way to go!
Really enjoyed the dining experience there. It lived up to its hype. I'm big fan of Nick's next door and liked the south version of Nick's too.
Drink menu is good and I like the margaritas there.
From Chips and Salsa to Gaucamole to SeaBass and all the Steak dishes are tasty and serving size with sides are excellent. Will go there again soon to try Tacos.
