Good beef on bun. Crispy fries. Carry out is in effect.

We had a great experience during our last visit to KC. Everything was cooked properly and the burnt ends were perfect. They have the best fries and BBQ sauce in KC.

I would like to add we quit going to Gates for awhile because it felt like "they lost the love". But if they keep producing quality food we will be there.

Gates is one of a few barbeque places in Kansas City that you must go to. They are rightfully well known for loud service at the counter. The service is efficient. The food is excellent. I am partial to their burnt ends sandwich, baked beans and onion rings. The seating is plentiful, spacious and casual.

Be very hungry when you go and if you go for lunch, plan to only have a snack for dinner because you won't get hungry.

I was visiting Kansas City area for work and was staying in the Shawnee area. I did a search to find good barbecue places and Gates came up. It was 15 to 20 minutes away but I thought I would give it a shot. to be honest it didn't look like much from the outside when I got there. I walked in and immediately it had an authentic barbecue feel to it though. I ordered the sampler plate which had ribs brisket and pork with a side of steak fries. It was pretty massive I didn't think there was much chance of getting it down but of course it was so good I ate everything but a few of the fries. In terms of sauce I like the sweet and tangy the best but the original was decent as well. All the meats were pretty delicious quite a bit of fat on the pork but still tasty. Steak fries were good as well. staff for friendly helpful when I told them I was from out of town and had not been or ordered there before. I will definitely be going back when I'm in town again.
