1ST TIME VISITOR - I'm moving to the area and had driven by Just Barb's more than a few times before giving it a try. Parking lot is generally full which is usually a good sign for a restaurant. I knew about their Friday night Prime Rib dinner so I thought I'd plan a trip on a Friday; I brought my wife and mother-in-law along for the ride.
Got there about 6 pm and the parking lot was full. Walked inside and noticed a couple empty tables, we were seated right away. The waitress mentioned it was her first night working there and we told her it was our first visit so we'd all be on equal terms!
She quickly got a drink order in. The ladies ordered Merlot and i ordered a local beer. The waitress seemed embarrassed that the Merlot was kept chilled (I'm not a wine guy so I wouldn't have known the difference) but the ladies didn't mind at all.
Both the ladies ordered the fish stew and I ordered the prime rib, medium-rare. My salad arrived first and honestly wasn't much to write home about - really basic iceberg lettuce, a couple tomato slices and slices of onion. It was all fresh though and I ate every bit. We waited for the meals to arrive and my wife said the menu had warned that the fish chowder was 'made to order' so it would take awhile.
When the food arrived we could see why it had taken a bit. The bowls of chowder were generous. the broth was creamy and HOT! Both bowls had large chunks of fresh, flaky white fish and they smelled great. My steak and baked potato showed up and filled the plate. The cut was generous and done to my liking. It was served with a small bowl of au jus which I poured over the baked potato. I asked if they had horseradish sauce and the waitress quickly brought out a small container for me.
The meal was great. Very, very tasty. Both women raved about the fish chowder and said it was waaaay more than they expected (though I noticed both of them cleaned their bowls!!) My prime rib was marbled just right and had really nice flavor to it.
There's nothing special about this place in terms of atmosphere but they make up for it in good food. I'll definitely be back to try one of their seafood specialties. I hope the waitress likes working there as she was very friendly and attentive - she made the night enjoyable.
Evan is an outstanding server. Clean and fast service. Variety to pick from. Fries addicting, ribeye steak terrific an squash with maple syrup drizzled on it. Small crisp lettuce salad perfect for warming up your choppers. Ice, ice cold brew. Seriously stop it.
We heard about this place from a friend. We took the scenic route from Northeast Harbor Maine to Freeport via route 1 and this place was on the way. Despite the dreary, pouring rain, we had an AMAZING meal at Just Barb's. This low-key local joint is excellent. My wife and I shared the seafood sampler and we were both stuffed! This was the best fish fry we ever had! Do yourself a favor and try this place! You won't be disappointed!
Nice place. Server was efficient, friendly and had good menu suggestions. Off the busy road, but worth turning around. I had a burger with fries and slaw. Great food!well worth the visit.
Great food & friendly service. Cute little diner where we stopped and got lunch. I had the lobster which was incredibly fresh & delicious. The fries & coleslaw sides were very good too. The real standout was the pie though, which was a blueberry in our case & had a perfect crust with unbelievable blueberry filling.
