San José Mexican Bar & Grill

Ordered take out and was pretty bummed that the food was lacking flavor. We used to order often when it was LaFondas and never really had an issue. When calling in the order, they were asked if there was a way to order one of each type of enchilada (one beef, one chicken and one cheese instead of three beef or chicken). Totally fine if we had to pay ala carte pricing upcharge for the difference (chicken and beef were both the same price), but the person taking the order laughed and said no.

Just tried this location after the previous restaurant that was in its place. Busy night, we waited a bit for the waitress to get our bill, but good food. I really liked the salsa. I usually go to the other one at the other end of elizabeth lake road, but I think I will go to this one. It is bigger!

Not sure what curry the other reviewer is talking about, sounds like a fake review. San Jose is owned by Taqueria San Jose further down Elizabeth Lake Rd. A long running and beloved authentic Mexican restaurant in Waterford. San Jose is offering the same food in a bigger location. I hope they do well, it’s always busy, which is good! When they first started it took a RIDICULOUS amount of time for food to come out. I think they were overwhelmed by the interest and unable to keep up. That has really improved. The last two times I went my food was out within 15-20 minutes as it should be and was cooked to perfection. San Jose has some of the best authentic Mexican food you’ll find in Waterford. And the absolute best Horchata.

After eating at their original location regularly for over 8 years, we decided to try their newly opened locale. I ordered the Tamarind Margarita.... no tamarind, so I got a (very tasty) Mojito instead. Tamales were good, a little small, but moist and flavorful. The kicker of the evening was: when the server took my credit card, she came back to tell me that they would charge me 4% for using a credit or debit card. Legal in the State of Michigan, but I HAVE NEVER BEEN CHARGED THAT IN A RESTAURANT SINCE THE AG APPROVED IT IN 2013. Needless to say I was a bit livid that the restaurant would charge me THEIR credit card processing fee for a $50 dinner for 2. I had the cash, left a nice tip, and vowed not to go back until they amend their 4% add-on. I manage a restaurant, it's the price of doing business. Up your menu items by 4%, but please do not surprise your customers at check out. Just because you "can", doesn't mean you "should".
