“What an awesome place! I am having the time of my life. Small town beautiful cabin with its charm. Great outdoors activities, it is a family own business passed on from one generation to the next. It is charmed next to the restaurant. If you want a quiet place to rest and enjoy to slow down than you should come here. I love it far enough from the madness of the cities but close enough to go back if you missed it. The cabins are beautiful and the people are super nice. I had the privilege to meet the mother of the new owner and she was delightful. I highly recommend this gem!! Worth the trip!!! Will be back soon...”

“Absolutely charming and comfortable! If I hadn’t been flying home I might have tried to bargain to buy some of the antique decor. My only regret was that I was there in Nov and it was too cold to enjoy the garden. The proprietor was also very welcoming, with lots of advice for what to do, and good stories. Note: the train runs right along the city of Alma, so if you’re a light sleeper, it might not be the place for you. But that’s the whole town, not the hotel in particular!”

A unique and kind of quirky building with plenty of seating and a cool bar in back which offers any bourbon you can think of. We were there for live music which provided a lively atmosphere. And the outside garden area is very inviting with a rock landscaped terrace, a stately deer and water fall, too! Unique menu. Interesting sounding entrees. The food is good, but for the price and ambience, it needs to be excellent. No doubt it will grow to that status in time. I love this dining experience!”

“Showed up on a Saturday afternoon in October to realize they weren’t open yet. Instead of shooing us out, they insisted we stay for them to cook for us. We ordered the special deluxe pizza and it was very good. Crunchy thin crust, which I like. We also had the Spumoni for dessert. It was very refreshing to be treated like valued customers! We will definitely be back!”

“WOW! Great food and great atmosphere. I had the banger and beef with a side cup of their authentic Irish potato soup and my wife had Jack’s famous roast beef. All was delicious. I loved the homemade banger sausage and the pulled corn beef was the best I ever had. Wife said the roast beef was amazing and the bakery roll it was served on was really good. We had to ask how the homemade horseradish sauce was put together, but was kindly denied the recipe as it is a family secret. As I enjoyed a couple pints of their signature lagers, we were entertained by a gent playing the piano. After dinner... we just had to get up and walk. We wandered about the restaurant taking in all the unique pieces of furniture and awesome bar. Jack met us on the outside balcony and shared a little history with us. We felt as family! Unfortunately we only make it through Fountain City a few times a year because we live in central Illinois, but we will stop at the Monarch every time from now on. Thanks for what you are doing Jack.”
