“Baby Cafe is essentially what would happen if a Hong Kong cha chaan teng was also a boba shop but in an american food hall. If that sounds good to you, you'll probably enjoy the food a lot and appreciate the combinations of flavors like five spice popcorn chicken and hk milk tea with boba. The drinks can be hit or miss (some really hit though) and it sometimes feels like the odds of them having tapioca pearls in stock are about the same as a McDonald's having a working ice cream machine. Baby Cafe is also the only boba shop in the neighborhood so expect to wait. Not sure what happened to all of the other reviews and the other review (one star) that's up is suspiciously worded and doesn't appear to know what a hainan chicken rice is. We particularly love the stewed beef, curry pork chop, and fresh taro with boba.”

“The black pepper beef is just okay, nothing special about it. I actually found the gravy/sauce too think, possibly due to too much starch. The flavor was ok. My friend had the deep fried curry pork loin chop and it was a bit better, mostly because anything deep fried is better. The curry was actually very thick as well, very much like a paste than a sauce.”

There was a funky smell though I thought was a bit strange. I checked under my table and there was a dead possum. “The location is pretty convenient. Right in the heart of West Oakland/Emeryville border. The tables are not really clean when you come early in the morning, which is when I usually go. I always have to search for a table that has been wiped down (because you seat yourself so you have to look for a clean table). The staff is great and always greet you. The food is good. The buttermilk pancakes, obviously, are the best.”
