It was good. It was not mind blowing. They won a James Beard award, which is no joke. But it was 24 years ago, so things may have changed a bit. The short ribs and kalua pork were the best part. The lomi salmon was quite fishy, but I guess what you expect from fish that isn't local. Over all, worth a visit. But don't expect to taste the best thing you ever tasted.

Letting you all know up front, this place only takes cash, so come prepared. There's also no ATM on site, so you're walking a block or so if all you're carrying is plastic.

Parking wasn't as bad as some let on, and seating wasn't an issue either. We visited on a Wednesday evening, so maybe that's the key.

I got the kalua and ribs, both of which were awesome. I didn't try the poi, but the guys I was with (who had never had it) said it wasn't bad. It's definitely got to be an acquired taste kinda thing, but if it's your thing, I'm guessing this poi would deliver. I'm not native to Hawaii, but even I could tell the food was pretty authentic. The flavors were simple but rich. Really good food overall.

Service was awesome, and our server was very personable. They went over the menu with us, and let us know what was up with the condiments.

The place itself isn't sexy, and the building is pretty much a hole in the wall. That being said, these kinds of places typically deliver, and this one is no exception. They have been doing this a while (since the 40's or so), and it shows in the food. So long as that's the case, I can forgo the fancy decor.

The short ribs were my favorite by far, but the pulled pork and coconut custard dessert were also amazing. The staff was very friendly and the food came out extremely fast even though they were pretty busy. They are cash only so come prepared.

This is a must visit if you are in the neighborhood. Came early and had one of the first tables for lunch/breakfast. Recommend trying everything at this place as the plates are all family style. The staff is all wonderful and you will have an authentic experience in here.

Helena's provided us with great customer service and a very entertaining dining experience. We visited this place off the recommendation of Matt The Traveler on YouTube and it was exactly what he said it would be! We were able to enjoy the true authentic Hawaii food experience. The food was flavorful and we are glad we got the chance to experience it.
