Why did I do this to myself? Expensive but so worth it. I can't afford these kinds of habits! Glad I don't live here now. Suffice to say everything was excellent. I got there early in their dining service, having waited it out perusing Oak St. Kept the party going with a really good unfiltered/cloudy sake. The miso, while disappointing for me being tofu less, more than made up for it with a broth of vigor that would make IC Michiba proud. Talking to the chef towards the end of my meal, he explained to me that they use all the parts of the fish they buy, and it showed. I haven't had uni or ikura too often, but the quality and flavor was obvious. It wasn't salty, smooth texture and the roe had a pleasant bite. Both the bluefin sashimi and the spicy tuna hr were the best tuna I've ever had. Fatty, slightly sweet and of course well prepared. Single best sushi meal I've had since Morimoto's in Philly several years ago. Extra points for the head chef to share her knowledge, train her staff and give them the ability to perform like that without being in town.

The food was okay, a bit lacking in authentic options and true Asian flavors- a very Westernized approach to Japanese foods. The handrolls are sort if loosly rolled and it lacks some finesse in technique. The atmosphere was dull and quiet- not a ton of energy in the space. Service was fine- except the waitress kept standing behind me to address the group, so I couldn't see her- not sure why she didn't stay on the other side of the seating space so we could see her as she spoke to us. It was a bit strange to order with someone standing behind you. This place can use some spice and improvement. However, their black sesame ice cream was bomb! Don't sleep on that.

Hip, small, Single table + sushi bar spot uptown with a great drink menu and fantastic hand rolls. Been a few times now, the food is consistently delicious and the service is friendly. Highly recommend for a date spot or dinner with friends. Get the pickles!!!!

UPDATE! I went back to Sukeban for a second time and it still was absolutely delicious. Worth every penny for the freshest seafood in the city and a true upscale Izakaya experience. And the service was top notch!!!

Sukeban is a true gem in New Orleans and is not your run of the mill sushi place! It’s the Michelin star of Japanese dining in NOLA with the freshest, high quality seafood you can find in the city! I can’t recommend this place enough if you want amazing Temaki and great service by the amazing staff! If you are looking for $5 california rolls … this ain’t the place!

Absolutely phenomenal food, service, and atmosphere. The quality of seafood and ingredients are the best in the city and the menu is priced incredibly fairly in accordance to the outstanding care and quality of these dishes. People who complain about prices in these reviews are just used to basic, average, mediocre Americanized sushi prices and obviously not used to this kind of quality. Bravo to the incredible team at Sukeban that has sourced such outstanding ingredients and created such a special place for those of us who appreciate an authentic niche and incredible Japanese experience. You can tell Chef Jackie has done her research with glowing reverence and respect of this food - it certainly shows from all of her travels to Japan. Shout it from the mountain tops - Sukeban is the BEST. Don’t walk, run to this Uptown gem!
