“Helen's is a great American relic-- a truly local restaurant where you get a sense of small-town rural American culture. Very few tourists here, mostly locals who have been coming for decades. There specialty is down-home country cooking. They don't spare the grease, because that is what their clientele wants. This is deep south, where good means deep fried. Nothing against it, but my stomach just can't handle it anymore. I stick with the BLT or ham sandwich, though I know people who relish the Ruben with fries, and seem no worse off. They do try for fresh-- their burgers are homemade, and salads are good. But mostly I love the smiley waitresses with their local drawls and genuine happiness to see you. They're happy to help with anything, and even hang naturally at your table for a bit of gossip. Finally the local-made cakes and pies are true South, and to die for. Stop, at least for a humongous piece of fresh cake (you'll need to share) and coffee (no espresso drinks here), and you will have a truly international level experience.”

“Great breakfast menu, reasonably priced, and very quick service, especially if you get there right at opening time. Lots of local regulars when I take the kids for breakfast before school. I highly recommend Paul's Pancake breakfast.”

“Absolutely one of the finest meals my wife and I have enjoyed in quite a long time. The servers were attentive, knowledgeable and enthusiastic....as well as quite correct about the merits of the Key Lime pie! The ribs exquisite, the filet exceptional ...kudos to all involved in making our visit to Mountain Holler an evening to remember.”

“Today I went to the tropical grill during the Blacksmith festival and the tropical grill was insanely busy. Despite this, the waitresses were still very attentive and got us our drinks and took our orders as soon as we were ready. Our drinks never reached under half full and anything we needed was provided right away. They also made very sure that we enjoyed everything and the food was incomparable to any restaurant in this area. I will definitely be coming back and recommending this restaurant to all of my friends.”

“Great food, great service and affordable pricing. Serving beer and mixed drinks as well as traditional beverages including southren sweet tea that is excellent! The margaritas are great also.”

“This little place in the charming, if unfocused, mountain town of Spruce Pine has an interesting menu with fresh ingredients and unique recipes. Mostly familiar Mexican items like tacos and burritos. Each has an interesting twist, and they strive for fresh, local ingredients, which are pretty good. They bill themselves as Latin Fusion, and plan for a broader, varied menu to include original small plates, clever sandwiches, soups, more desserts, etc. They opened just a few weeks ago, so things weren't perfect, but it was a happy visit. They tried hard, with cheerful staff, and busy kitchen, so it certainly will move from very good to excellent. A sauce bar with 4 different tastes is a nice addition. The seats and tables are native wood, and while interesting, don't invite diners' backsides to linger. Passable selection of healthy vegetarian/vegan dishes-- and more to come. I enjoyed the vegan fajita, which was a tad greasy, and I suspect might have come from a steam tray, and not right off the grill. But small, local places like this, off the beaten track, have to make some compromises. They should be applauded for their efforts. Beer, wine, and liquors are sold, which is quite an achievement for a dry Bible Belt county that does all it can to put innovative restaurants like this out of business-- for their sinful ways. I will go back, probably frequently, as they get everything in sync. Definitely worth the stop.”

“So with a ghetto looking building and there cash only I was skeptical. However they use fresh ingredients and cheese and the food is amazing. I had a Greek salad and man's meat pizza and it was very good. Nice staff also”

“Great burger. Nice lady came out and took our order then brought our food to the truck--- that's a special, different kind of dining experience. I'd love to try the BBQ. They also have foot long hot dogs. Fries and tots were fresh and hot with plenty of ketchup packets.”

“My husband and I ordered hot ham & cheese sandwiches and they were actually hot and fresh. We have been avoiding Hardee's lately because our food was cold and did not taste very good the last two times but this meal was totally different. The onion rings we're fresh and hot too.”

“We had a big party and arrived late (without realizing they close at 9). The waiters were still nice and attentive though our food arrived after closing time. Throughout our entire stay, each time we came in for breakfast or dinner they were very friendly. Thank you for a great time!”

“I have dined here several times. Everything I have ordered salads, steaks, burgers, seafood were scrumptious. Please do not let the rednecks writing some of these reviews deter you from trying what is truly a great restaurant that Spruce Pine is lucky to have. However, I play golf here and for years I have wished there was something quick to pick at the restaurant like hotdogs before hitting the links. I work in advertisement and I can tell you that the local golfers are the life source ($$$) of Grassy Creek Golf Course... be very nice to the local golfers...”

“Easy access to pick up. Our order was wrong as usual. We also had to wait for the wrong order then for them to get it right. The food is great when we get it home. That's why we go back. Service isn't good but the food taste delicious!”

“Food is good basic fare, hearty and bountiful. What it lacks in atmosphere (decor, lighting, physical comforts) it more than makes up for in pricing. Super affordable! Servers are always pleasant. My friends and I work out at the gym and then hit its salad bar regularly.”

“I only eat the McGriddle with sausage and egg, no cheese, with a hash brown and large sweet tea or large vanilla cappuccino. Always great and my order is always correct. My visits are at all different times of the day and there is never much of a wait.”

“Was pleased to be able to choose Japanese or Chinese style food. And I could choose to get noodles instead of rice. I didn't much like the chicken but everything else was really good. Especially the little egg roll I got, it was awesome. I ordered my food to go. It was fixed quicker then expected. The buffet looked good as well, just didn't have time to stay. Next time:)”

“Awesome cheeseburger on a big soft bun that reminded me of the diners of yesteryear. And their onion rings are the best I've ever had anywhere! I loved the salt and pepper breading on them. Highly recommended!”

“Great KFC/TacoBell location! As good as any that I've ever been to! If you're look'n fer some quick chickeny/ Mexicalish food that you can get hot without even leaving your car, than this is the place to go! Fast, friendly service from a great local staff that loves you and your business! I just wish their management would step up and show some Mountaineer Pride in our county by participating in an Adopt-a-Highway program. Talk with the folks at DOT today! The free publicity wouldn't hurt and we all need to do some community service. Heck, with a little effort, they might even get five stars from me!”

“Off the Blue Ridge Parkway, well worth the trip. Great food and very friendly staff. If you're wanting fast food or in a hurry this is not for you. Food is cooked fresh when ordered, not cooked and sitting under heat lamps. Everything is made from scratch and raised by Lacey (owner). Had the sausage sandwich red and green grilled peppers and onions with fries. Great sweet tea. Outdoor eating only, stays busy. Well worth the trip and wait.”
