“This is actually my first time here. The store seems nice and slightly smells of baked goods. They had nice music playing which i think was a little too loud. I also find it odd that it was being played live for a bagel location. It seems... Unnecessary? But nice nonetheless. Overall the service was pretty good, and all staff treated us with much kindness and willingness to help. It seems like maybe they're trying out a new system in how they serve that seems a little too complex and out of order. The staff also seemed to be struggling slightly with the setup. As for the food: bagels are of some of the better ones I've had in the area. It's not what I'm used to from New York but definitely worth a try. The breakfast sandwich I had was tasty, although the sausage was too salty. Even so I was able to enjoy it completly accompanied by egg and cheese on a buttered egg bagel. Their selection of cream cheese could be better but it is alright enough. The cream cheese is good but not really remarkable in any fashion. Just good ol cream cheese. The coffee was pretty good as well. I'm struggling to leave this as a 4 star review because I think they're definitely headed for a 5 but i think the location could make some important reasonable changes to hit that mark. ------- I've returned here a few times and service has been much better. Since I'm travelling between Portland and Washington I haven't had time or ability to order a breakfast sandwich, but they have done a great job. The staff is still super nice and awesome. I think they're definitely a 5 star :D”

“I’ve picked up food three or four times from El Jefe, and have had it delivered probably the same number of times. I just discovered this restaurant about 6 months ago. Top notch food, hands down. The flavor of the food is put together wonderfully. I always order the steak and it’s seasoned and cooked perfectly. One takeout trip I ordered a taco plate for my wife, and I asked for no onions. A good number of spots mix their onions and cilantro together. If you order no onions, you also get no cilantro. That did not happen at El Jefe. The attention to detail with their food is great, and their food tastes even better! The restaurant is clean, bright, and very welcoming. The folks working there I’ve interacted with are very friendly and nice. Thanks for being in our neighborhood El Jefe, and I look forward to my next visit there!”

“We’re here visiting from Atlanta to snowboard and tour Portland a bit. We stopped here for a late dinner and the food was phenomenal. If you’re into seafood you’ll love it. The house made salsas we’re especially delicious! Please get the empanadas they will change your life! We are here twice during our stay in Portland. We brought our friends once they arrived and they were also thoroughly impressed. If I could take this place and clone it in Atlanta I would, in a heartbeat. We will absolutely be back when we visit Portland again!”
