“Paid a visit to Doodles Kitchen and Bakery this morning (formerly Vine Street Market), it is so refreshing to see the “Mom & Pop” places opening in and around the Square. As soon as I walked in the door my eyes immediately noticed a beautiful Linzer Cookie in the display case…one of my all-time favorites. This place offers a variety of grab and go meals, soups, and sandwiches plus some nice side items like ice cream and cheeses from Nash Family Creamery. It was a pleasure talking with the owners Charlie and Danielle Gallipoli who have a great passion for good food and baked goods. They are creating and testing a variety of items for the store and I got to sample one and share some feedback…I love being a test subject! Charlie and Danielle have a creative flair that will make it worthwhile to watch their announcements of new menu items. I’m looking forward to trying some of their grab & go meals and can’t wait for when Charlie adds the Turkey, Cranberry, Dressing sandwich to the menu…YUM! I picked up a few things to try and here’s what I found: Linzer Cookie…OMG incredible. I haven’t had an authentic tasting Linzer in years (my last time in NYC) and this one is delicious. A Linzer needs to be on the edge of soft but still crisp, buttery but not too moist so the powdered sugar absorbs, and the jam must be slightly sweet so you don’t overpower the nutty flavors. Close your eyes and you are in a NYC bakery enjoying this cookie…it is that good! Banana Cream Pie Cookie…at first I was like ??? but had to get one. If you love Banana Cream Pie…this is the cookie version when it comes to the flavors. The Oatmeal Raisin Cookie is old school reminding me of childhood…an excellent cookie. I would love to be in the store when these are baking, the smell must be incredible. The Jalapeño Pimento Cheese is delicious with a hint of a kick from the jalapeño and a nice creamy cheddar flavor…they do offer a non-jalapeño version too.”

“We finally have a Whataburger in the Boro. I went Grand Opening day like a dumdum. Even tho the line was insanely long, the employees made it move fairly quickly. They worked the line in the same manner Chik Fil A does with 2 lanes and employees coming out to take your order. I ordered the sweet and spicy bacon sandwich and it was just alright. I've realized that I'm not the biggest fan of their French fries. The menu was extensive and ill be back to try something else another time. The employees were all smiles. Very friendly. First impression for me, the food is mediocre and now I don't understand the hype this place brought. I'll still be back another time to try something else.”

“I have driven past Rikos Tacos food truck (BP Gas Station at the corner of Gresham Ln & Old Fort Parkway) more times than I can count. Met Jamie who is one of the owners and he said they have been open for six months. He told me about the menu and I decided to try the Quesa-Birria Red Taco and the Arrachera Taco for my first visit. The Birria Taco here is a little different than I’m used to but still packed with flavor and I enjoyed it. The shredded beef was juicy, tender, and had all of the flavors you expect from birria and the dipping juice was very good. The Arrachera was OK and I liked the addition of sautéed onions on the side. While the steak was tender there just wasn’t much flavor in the meat, but seeing as I had some additional Birria juice left, I went to town. The sauces provided were good, the red had some solid heat while I enjoyed the flavors of the green (lighter heat too) much better. I asked him about Mexican Street Corn and he said they are considering it…so if that’s your love let Jamie know. Jamie said you can also call ahead and they can have your order ready for you when you arrive. Overall good tacos and I’m looking forward to trying some of the other items on the menu.”
