“First time dining here, and it was great! We made reservations but arrived a little early, and they were able to seat us when we arrived as they were not that busy. The space is huge, so there were lots of tables available. The service was great! The hostess was very friendly, and our server delisha (not sure of the correct spelling) was great as well. The food we ordered was delicious! I would definitely return to try so more of the items on the menu!”

“I had dinner at The Annex twice last week. I wasn’t sure dinner at a pickleball place was the move since I don’t play pickleball (sorry), but there were plenty of other people there just to eat and drink and watch people play on the outdoor courts, so I was encouraged. Another plus was that I got to wear athleisure to a nice dinner without getting any raised eyebrows. The first time I went was with my boyfriend and we split the elotes ribs, which were insanely good, and did our own tacos. He got the chicken which he liked a lot and I did the shrimp. The chili oil and green sauce they serve on the side were *chef’s kiss.* We also each had mezcal palomas and were advised by the bartender to try with the smokier of the two main mezcal options, which was 100% the move. We went back later in the week for my boyfriend to play in Paddle Battle. While he did that, I sat at the bar and dined solo. A weird observation is that the bar windows are giant and they leave them open to look over the outdoor courts, but they have giant fans (they don’t blow straight on you but like around you? idk) so you have the benefit of feeling like you’re eating outside while also not expiring in the July record temps. Also it somehow is NOT loud even with the games going on outside and you can hear anyone who talks to you/the music in the Annex. But about the food: I revisited the shrimp tacos and did the Rally fries, which were crispy and perfect. And of course, I had 2 more palomas. The summary is that I’ll be back later this week. Love u, Annex.”

“I would come back for the brussel sprouts, they were so delicious! Wine was good, I like that you can get 2oz tasters of anything to make your own wine tasting, however one of our pours seemed a bit shy. The food was great, but not overly memorable other than the brussel sprouts. Loved sitting outside, it’s pretty and the lights overhead create a nice ambiance. Inside seemed very loud for a place that’s tiny and not overly busy. Overall it’s a nice place, possibly overpriced, but the food and wine were enjoyable!”

“This is the best poke I have had in Charlotte! I probably come here once a week. The owner is always working there and keeps the place super clean. Always consistent great taste and fresh. Happy to support a local business! Pro tip: Get a punch card to get your 11th bowl free :)”

“We tried The Penguin for the first time during Charlotte Restaurant Week (Queen’s Feast). Our service wasn’t terrible when we visited, but you could tell the team was a bit stressed and dishes were coming out at odd times (for example, our salads were served last and we saw another table confused as they received their desserts before their full meal had been served). Our waitress was flustered and apologetic about the ‘backed up kitchen’. We extend a bit of grace during Restaurant Week (this was the first weekend) as we know it’s not the standard menu, and every guest is ordering more dishes than would be typical. For drinks we had the Blackberry Mule and the Strawberry Fields. Both were excellent. I don’t typically care for Mules but am glad to have tried this one. For starters, we had the Nashville Hot Tenders and the Fried Pickles. The chicken was tender, but hot chicken is not my thing so I can’t say if it was good or bad. The pickles were very good with a light breading. Next was to be salads- the Shrimp and Avocado Salad was delicious and I was surprised at how good the shrimp tasted. For the main, I had the ‘Hike the Ball Nutjob’ and my date had the ‘Tommy Boy’. Both burgers were amazing. We ended up taking the desserts to go, so I won’t cover those here. Overall the food was very good, and we are excited to visit again and try something different and from the regular menu.”

“Tacos were delicious!! I would definitely come back here. The tacos were worth the price. They were a decent size and the soft shell tacos held up to the weight of the ingredients. I even downloaded the app to get their rewards. The space was bright and airy and the staff was very friendly. Overall an amazing experience.”

“I’m not sure what is going on here. Chicken wings mating with egg rolls to make a hot chicken egg roll. Delicious. Great tots. $5 margaritas $2 tacos. 1/2 tequila Tuesday. Nice outdoor deck with nice bar. Good place to escape the college kids on south blvd. good hidden gem and finally good service. That’s hard to find now. Plus walkable to plaza. Dangerous but fun”
