Also picked up some snacks for the trip and the guy at the counter was smiling and made it a pleasant experience. If I'm coming back through I'd definitely stop here. “El Muchacho Alegre just opened. My visit was May 2nd 2022. This new Mexican restaurant is in the original Don Pablo's building behind Barnes and Noble. It was nice to see this location open again. The family friendly restaurant serves a large menu of classic Mexican food. The prices seemed reasonable for the area. Plenty of parking. The same shaded patio, perfect for after work margaritas in the summer. There is updated and more seating added from the previous establishment. I think they did well to change the décor just enough to make it feel less cabin/lodge and more southwest. I was surprised to see they kept all the TVs in place and showed some sports other than soccer. The tables were spaced well. It looked like they could handle some larger parties as well. I sat at the bar, so not sure what the table service was like, but the bartender took my order for drinks quickly and served it quickly. They have a full bar with beers on tap. Chips were fresh and served with a bottle of salsa as soon as I sat down. Margarita's come in many shapes and sizes. One of the stemmed glasses behind the bar looked like it could hold a gallon. I ordered the 16oz and it was as good as most. Food came out minutes after I ordered. I hope they can keep that kind of service level going forward. I ordered the Texas Burrito. It was served with rice, beans and a bit of Pico. The white queso cheese dip served on top of the burritos was similar to other Mexican spots in the area. Next time I will get a side order of the queso for the chips. The rice and beans were nothing exciting, reminding me of the kind you can find at Chili's. I could not tell if they were made from scratch. The burritos were cooked well with seasoned cubed steak. I get this dish often at other local Mexican spots and this was as good as any. Nice big portion. It seemed like that was true for other dishes that I saw come out of the kitchen. As I mentioned the menu is pretty big. It has seafood dishes, steak and chicken dishes, and all your Mexican favorites. I did see a kids menu that did have chicken nuggets and corndogs for kiddos that do not appreciate Mexican food. I didn't see a desert menu, but did see them create a plate with ice cream on it for someone. So maybe it is a work in progress. All in all I was impressed with most everything at El Muchacho Alegre. They did really well for just opening. I will visit there again to try a few different dishes.”

“Brunch is from 9-2. So good. There’s a bloody/mimosa bar, $17 for bottomless plus $1 for each refill. I had the breakfast bagel which came with potatoes. And we also had the avocado toast and added everything bagel seasoning and it was very good. Bloody Mary also was mixed perfectly. Lots of TV’s for sports watching, plenty of seating and garage doors for when patio season arrives.”

No intentions to go back. One calzone for $30 wasn't worth it (plus $4 per topping! And there didn't seem to be much of toppings in it).”

“We go to strange places for good fast food. As a none libations person — Krispy Chicken — inside corner of a liquor store is indeed strange. However, getting there at 11:10 AM just for the Hot out of the basket chicken, was worth tipping past the strange fruit. WILL, the attendant in charge, assured me that the Krispy Chicken would be Krunchy, Fresh, Well Seasoned and Temperature Ready. Indeed it was! While well in to Lent, I am anxious to try their — cooked to order — Cod Filet!”

“My daughter attended her junior prom at this venue. The setup was beautiful. They used different rooms for the various activities they had planned for the night. “This recently opened Mexican Food & Taco Truck offers a culinary experience that is absolutely out of this world. They have an amazing offering beyond the standard fare of your typical Taco Truck. Carnitas and Menudo is available on weekends, and occasionally authentic churros are offered as well. Multiple protein choices are available depending on your preference including chicken, steak, chorizo, al pastor, lengua, tripa, lavio, and shrimp. Additional options include a large nacho and asada fries. Serving sizes are more than generous. Other menu items include Tortas and Deep fried potato tacos for vegetarians. Elote, mexican street corn, is also available. The owners and staff are clearly passionate about providing quality food produced in their immaculately clean truck which is typically parked at Supermart near 63rd and Railroad in West Des Moines. Tacos are served on fresh corn tortillas with seasoned grilled onions, limes, and radish. Chiles Toreados are available on request for a little spice. Every order includes an amazing red and green hot sauce. Quesabirria is available with consome that is honestly the best I have had from any establishment, truck or brick and mortar. They also offer Quesabirria with asada instead which is pictured below. Dipping in the consome delivers a shock to your taste buds you won’t soon forget. Unlike many trucks which are cash only, they not only accept cards but also Apple Pay, which provides additional options not typically available. The prices are a good value for what is offered - many local trucks with similar prices do not seem to carry the same authenticity or quality of ingredients, truly setting this truck apart.”

“I had the treat of trying Tarboosh when I was home over Thanksgiving at the holiday farmers market. I’m originally from Iowa but live in New York and I’ve been on the hunt to find anything as good as Tarboosh since November. Everything is absolutely delicious. “Hooray for the Valley Junction Business District that has attracted another family owned local eatery & pub called Bix with the last year. The inside mod to trendy decor has large sports screens, well spaced booths and table top seating. The selectively designed menu was very inviting with fresh made to order entrees. My Turkey Melt was huge with a fresh salad and an excellent server. The wait time and value of my entire meal was reasonable for a deliciously made to order main course. Depending on the time of day your only drawback will be close parking.”

“The food here is fantastic. I ordered the Acheke which came with plaintain fries. Plus the price is cheaper than Patience African Cuisine which is the other Liberian restaurant in Des Moines. The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is because of the owner. He is extremely annoying while a customer is trying to eat in the restaurant. He kept joking around with his friends and kept on saying "stop playing boy." If you want to joke around that's fine, but don't annoy all your customers eating in the restaurant during the process.”
