Black Friar Inn & Pub

Address: 10 Summer St, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, USA

Restaurant

“Entering the Black Friar feels like stepping on board a schooner ship. The crew hoists their colors proudly as they rightfully should, with an eclectic atmosphere and fresh local seafood that will have you staying longer than you thought you would. Fresh, local oysters are to not be missed at their daily happy hour, and the lobster Benedict was a perfect welcome to Maine. Take your cocktail from the bar to the quaint rooftop deck. Note that there is no elevator, so bags must be carried upstairs to rooms. Character (in the best sense) is not lacking here, in a true Maine fashion! Service was great and the food alone is worth a visit.”

“It was a busy Monday after lunch but our server, Kim, was just awesome! We were impressed with her service despite the busy afternoon. The food did take a while but it was understandable. The lobster roll was very generous from someone coming from the midwest. The short rib was phenomenal, very flavorful but the portion was smaller than anticipated. Our favorite part was the dessert. We definitely had to ask Kim since there were too many choices, she told us to try her personal fave Berry trifle and the popular open faced ice cream. She did not disappoint, they were all so good, especially the trifle, a must try for everyone!”

This place is perfect for when all the businesses around town close and I still want something to drink at the end of the night.”

Merchant & Frye

Address: 8 Cottage St, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, USA

Restaurant

“Fantastic food in a fresh comfortable atmosphere. I've been here three times now and and working on eating my way through the menu. Their take on Maine food re-imagined is both whimsical and well executed taking dishes like "franks and beans" and giving it a huge step up with heirloom beans and home made sausage. The pizza is delightful as is the home made pasta and don't get me started on the smash burger. They make everything from scratch including all the sauces and there are so many good sauces! The drinks are on point and many of the mixers are also made in house. The staff is friendly and attentive. Great for a group or a date. I can't wait to go back for round four!”

“This place is super yum. Had the coconut ice cream in a cup and was delicious. Full creamy flavor with balanced coconut pieces covered in chocolate. (Was nervous chocolate dominating but did not) Dad had peach ice cream and that took me back to childhood peaches and cream. They have soft serve as well and some cool savory light fare perfect for a beach blanket. The shop is tidy and curated well. Prices are very reasonable and they even had a discount for back to school. Super thoughtful. Nice seating outside and a cute courtyard to the side full of tables and little places to sit and enjoy. Sorry about the pic, but I the ice cream was too good and was left with this ice cream cup goose.”

Strong Brewing & Kitchen

Address: 7 Rope Ferry Rd, Sedgwick, ME 04676, USA

Restaurant

“PUTTING IN THE WORK. This establishment is great. Perhaps beyond great. They've been consistently putting in the work to improve. First it was the beer. Then the pavilion. Now a patio, an AMAZING brick oven (manned by the always-talented and phenomenal Capt. Pete, 5 stars for that alone) and an ever-expanding and improving food selection. The beer was already enough to go, but the food selection in itself is worth a trip. The business seems to be frequently updating their communication with customers across many platforms and keeping everyone informed of weekly specials, concerts, menu changes, and more. A terrific family-run business run by terrific folks. It'll be a regular stop in town from now on.”

House salad mostly arugula; I don't remember what else was in the salad but I liked it. I had a whole lobster for dinner and it was cooked just right so it was tender. Service was exceptionally friendly. Parking is on the street.”

Dennett's Wharf of Castine

Address: 15 Sea St, Castine, ME 04421, USA

Restaurant

“We are visiting Maine from the UK and came here for an evening meal. The restaurant has a great outlook over the water with a nice timber deck with outdoor seating. We really enjoyed the seafood and chicken wings with the enthusiastic and attentive staff doing their best … this place had only just opened. Whilst you are here spend some time walking around Castine to look at the majestic streets and historic houses. Well worth the detour!”

Pentagoet Inn & Wine Bar

Address: 26 Main St, Castine, ME 04421, USA

Restaurant

“The Pentagoet is a gem! My girlfriend and I were lucky enough to spend four nights here on our recent trip through Maine and had a fantastic and memorable stay. The inn had just changed ownership two weeks prior to our arrival, but our experience was seamless and there was a real sense of energy and excitement in the air. We were greeted by the new owners Matt and George literally on the front steps as we arrived, and they and the rest of the staff made the Pentagoet feel like a home away from home. In terms of practicalities, Matt gave us a long, personally-curated list of recommendations for places to go and things to do in the area that served as our itinerary for much of our visit, and we loved every stop along the way. At the inn, we enjoyed a delicious dinner with very friendly service (and live jazz!) at the restaurant, a few visits to the coziest pub you can imagine, and a restful few nights of sleep in our large and comfortable room. Bigger picture, the Pentagoet feels like the centerpiece and heart of the picturesque and charming town of Castine, and the building itself is full of history and the quirks one would expect from a 1890s Victorian. While Matt and George's creativity, impeccable tastes, and passion for their new project -- and lives -- is obvious, so is the emphasis they are putting on acting as thoughtful stewards of a place that's got such deep-rooted character and seems a gathering place and source of pride for the community. Thanks to Matt & George for being such amazing hosts! We really look forward to visiting the Pentagoet again soon and seeing how its next chapter unfolds.”
